Our teachers are both renowned educators and avid performers. Hip Hop in Buena Vista?! You bet! Why not celebrate an important and culturally significant part of our country’s musical history especially in our music-loving town! Here’s what local business owner, community leader, and Surf Hotel concert manager had to say about this exciting event, taking place in the Ivy Ballroom this Saturday, November 4th. 🎶
“Experiencing Hip Hop in a live setting is a rare opportunity in our small town. I’m incredibly excited these world renowned artists will be traveling to Buena Vista, some of them for the first time, to share their gifts and talents with our community. Hip Hop is poetry. The music from this genre instills thoughtfulness and wonder, and it’s always a fun dance party,” said Eddie Sandoval, Concert Manager for the Surf Hotel.
Guests can look forward to an impressive lineup including true record collector, music lover and historian, “BreakBeat” Lou known as Ultimate Breaks and Beats, who was influential in the growth of Hip Hop throughout the 80s and 90s releasing 25 compilation albums from 1986 to 1991. The Reminders are a rare and remarkable musical trio seamlessly blending soulful sounds and roots music with insightful messages and thoughtful lyrics. The group consists of Brussels-born emcee Big Samir and Queens-born emcee/ vocalist Aja Black, a collective creative force that’s hard to beat. Big Samir weaves intricate rhythmic patterns with a bilingual French/English flow, displaying his street smart credibility in both his lyrics and cool demeanor. DJ Matt Cassidy prides himself in the art of discovering new music that allows him to stand out from the act before or after him. He has been heavily circulating the Denver music scene as an independent act for over 24 years. He is an 8x performing artist at the world renown venue Red Rocks Amphitheater. Staying true to his urban roots, his sets pay homage to the artists who have inspired him throughout his career.
Ticket holders who present their local ID’s at the box office will enjoy one complimentary signature cocktail featuring Topo Chico, a presenting partner of the event.

We hope the community will join us in celebrating the incredible life of Bonnie Lea Culpepper (tomorrow) Sunday, October 22nd at Riverside Park in Salida from 1-3pm. There will be tears, there will be laughter, and there will be music. While there is seating at the park, guests are encouraged to bring camping chairs or blankets to sit on.
This will be a space to connect and remember Bonnie while enjoying some of the music she loved to play. This celebration will not be a potluck, however for those who would like to join, there will be a reception immediately following at the Highside Bar & Grill where we will gather, eat, drink, and continue to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Bonnie Lea Culpepper.

Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer is San Miguel County’s first poet laureate (2007-2011); she is also the Western Slope Poet Laureate (2015-2017) and was a finalist for Colorado Poet Laureate in 2019. And she's headed to Buena Vista for a very special reading and workshop!

Last month we were honored to once again to partne

Last month we were honored to once again to partner with Bonfire Entertainment to provide our Coletrain Strings & Song Kids Music Workshop at Renewal Festival with @billystrings. We enlisted Coletrain Music Academy teachers and senior students to help us teach the 70+ kids who registered! We also called upon some of our musical heroes like Patrick Fitzsimons from @thebluegrassjourneymen, Grace & Gordon from @romaransom, Casey Houlihan from @troutsteakrevival, Miles & Teo Quale from @cryinguncle, LeAnna Miller from The Whiskey Sweets, and Bonnie Lea Culpepper who all not only said yes to supporting music education, but also delighted festival-goers with a family jam and performance. For the kids who didn't register for the workshop, there was a drop-in kids music camp and creative station where hundreds of little ones got to paint Greetings From Renewal postcards, and get up close and personal with both string and percussion instruments! A huge shout out to all of our volunteers who helped make this special activation possible.
Of course none of this magic would have been possible without @be.bonfirentertainment and our sponsors, @elderlyinstruments who donated and discounted a fleet of guitars, ukuleles and mandolins and The Bluegrass Journeymen who purchased additional instruments including violins all to ensure we could serve as many kids as possible.
We are so grateful for our musical community who continue to say yes, show up, and champion the power of music education.
